Same-Week Sick Visits: When to Skip Urgent Care and Call Primary Care

When a sore throat, fever, or stomach bug hits on a Monday morning, most people's first instinct is to search for the nearest urgent care. But in a lot of cases, a sick visit with your primary care doctor is faster, cheaper, and clinically better — especially when you can be seen the same week by a physician who already knows your history. At MedexClinic, we keep same-week sick visit slots open every day for exactly this reason, and many visits can even start as a telemedicine call before you leave the house.

Why a sick visit with primary care often beats urgent care

Urgent care centers are built for one-off, walk-in acute problems. They're useful when your doctor's office is closed, when you're traveling, or when you need an X-ray at 10pm. But for most everyday illnesses, primary care has three big advantages:

  • Continuity. Your family physician already has your medical history, medication list, allergies, and lab trends. That context changes the diagnosis more often than people realize.
  • Follow-through. If your cough turns out to be the start of something bigger — asthma, reflux, a thyroid issue — primary care will actually loop back on it. Urgent care typically won't.
  • Lower total cost of care. Urgent care visits often lead to a second visit with your regular doctor anyway. Starting with primary care usually avoids the double appointment.

For Jacksonville patients, that often means skipping a two-hour urgent-care wait and getting a same-week appointment with a physician who can manage the whole picture.

What is a sick visit, exactly?

A sick visit (sometimes called an acute visit or problem-focused visit) is a short, same-week appointment to evaluate a new or worsening symptom. It's different from a yearly physical or chronic-disease follow-up. The goal is simple: figure out what's wrong, start treatment, and decide whether you need labs, imaging, or a specialist referral.

Most sick visits take 15–25 minutes. You'll describe your symptoms, the doctor will examine you, and you'll usually leave with a plan the same day — sometimes including an in-office test (strep, flu, COVID, urinalysis, EKG, pregnancy, blood sugar) so you don't have to wait days for answers.

Common conditions handled in-office

Here's a non-exhaustive list of the issues we see every week at a sick visit. If your symptom is on this list, primary care is almost always the right first call:

  • Sore throat, strep, tonsillitis
  • Cough, bronchitis, sinus infection, seasonal allergies
  • Flu, COVID-19, RSV, and other viral illnesses
  • Earaches and ear infections
  • Pink eye and other mild eye irritation
  • Fever without a clear source
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach bugs, mild dehydration
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Yeast infections and other common vaginal symptoms
  • Skin issues: rashes, hives, mild cellulitis, poison ivy, acne flares, ingrown nails
  • Minor injuries, sprains, back pain, and musculoskeletal strains
  • Blood pressure or blood sugar readings that are suddenly off
  • Medication refills tied to a new symptom
  • Mental health check-ins for anxiety, mood, or sleep concerns

When should you go to urgent care or the ER instead?

Primary care is the right first stop for most illnesses, but some symptoms shouldn't wait for an office appointment. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if you have:

  • Chest pain, pressure, or shortness of breath at rest
  • Sudden weakness, numbness, slurred speech, or facial drooping
  • Severe abdominal pain, especially with fever or vomiting blood
  • A head injury with loss of consciousness, confusion, or repeated vomiting
  • Heavy, uncontrolled bleeding or a deep wound
  • A severe allergic reaction with swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat
  • Fever in a baby under 3 months old

Urgent care is a reasonable middle ground after hours — for example, a possible broken bone that needs an X-ray on a Saturday night, or a laceration that needs stitches when the office is closed. During normal business hours, call us first; we can almost always get you in.

How does a telemedicine sick visit work?

Not every sick visit needs to happen in person. Telemedicine is a good fit when you can describe symptoms clearly, don't need a physical exam of an internal structure, and don't need in-office testing. Common telemedicine-friendly reasons include:

  • Follow-ups on an existing illness or recent lab result
  • Rashes you can show on camera
  • Mild UTI symptoms in patients with a prior history
  • Allergy flares, reflux, or medication questions
  • Mental health check-ins
  • Deciding whether you need to come in at all

If we start on video and realize you need to be seen, we'll bring you into our Baymeadows or Westside office the same day whenever possible.

What to expect at your first sick visit

Even if you've never been to MedexClinic before, we can usually see you as a new patient within a few days — and sometimes same-day. Here's how a typical sick visit flows:

  • Intake (5 minutes): ID, insurance, a short symptom questionnaire, and vitals.
  • History and exam (10–15 minutes): The physician reviews your symptoms, timeline, medications, and does a focused physical exam.
  • In-office testing if needed: Rapid strep, flu, COVID, urinalysis, blood glucose, EKG, pregnancy test, or basic blood draws.
  • Plan: A written treatment plan, any prescriptions sent electronically to your pharmacy, work/school notes, and a clear follow-up timeline.

If a prescription is appropriate for your condition, it's chosen specifically for you by your physician — not as a product being sold. Any medication is one part of a broader plan that includes rest, hydration, follow-up, and prevention.

Who you'll see

Sick visits at MedexClinic are led by Dr. Asim Nouman, MD, an experienced family physician with 18+ years of clinical practice. His focus on family medicine means he regularly handles the full range of acute problems — from a toddler's ear infection to an adult's new onset of high blood pressure — and knows when a symptom is simple and when it needs deeper workup. The practice runs out of two Jacksonville locations: Baymeadows (9551 Baymeadows Rd, Suite 6) and Westside (1395 Cassat Ave, Suite 3).

How to book a same-week sick visit

You have three easy options:

  • Call us at (904) 444-2903 and ask for a sick visit — we'll tell you the next available slot at either location, or offer telemedicine.
  • Book online any time, including evenings and weekends.
  • Start with a message if you're not sure whether to come in; we can triage and point you to the right level of care.

Keeping primary care as your first stop also makes future illnesses easier to manage — your chart grows with you, and the clinician who treats your flu this winter is the same one who'll look at your labs next spring.
